If you are using a Windows (Microsoft) machine, you are using the NTFS format on the native internal drive. "NTFS (New Technology File System) is a proprietaryfile system developed by Microsoft. Starting with Windows NT, 3.1, it is the default file system of the Windows NT family."

If you are using an external hard drive on an Apple machine, you can format it to the exFAT format and eliminate the writing error being tossed by Photoshop. This will allow you to save directly to the external drive and will also function completely on a Microsoft enabled machine. This is useful if you are using an Apple machine with a (Bootcamp) Windows partition on it.

I use five external drives on a late 2012 MacBook Pro and they are all formatted to exFAT. I use PSCS6 Extended in the Mavericks environment and PSCS5 Extended in the Windows environment. I have no issue on either partition with any of the drives.
