Splitting 3D model into layers

Hi,

I have a 3D model of a boat, created in a program called DelftShip and exported as a .obj file, that i would like to render using Photoshop CS6. However, the .obj file does not include layers, so i get the whole model as one layer in PS. So the whole model is on one layer and all colored grey. This makes it very difficult to color/texture/render different parts of the model in different ways. Say for example that i want a blue hull with reflection, and a matt white superstructure, this will be almost impossible to do with only one layer.

Is there any way to split the model into layers, so i can work on it more easily, or do you have any other suggestions on how i might approach this?

Thankful for any suggestions.

Regards

Marcus
